My Rhythms Around Us project has grown out of my everyday encounters with the world around me, as I move my body through it. I have built this work from a practice of noticing. By noticing, I savor the shapes, colors, noises, and smells—the moments of delight, disgust, and surprise—I encounter during daily neighborhood walks and other repetitive domestic tasks. I capture these details with my camera, my sketchbook, and in the scraps of paper, worn and molded by human use, that I find on the sidewalk. I layer the materials, imagery, and environmental sounds I have collected to create densely textured works full of strong shapes, rhythm, and color that welcomes and moves the eye. The artworks that emerge from my processes tell a story about the place I am living in, whether at home in Los Angeles or elsewhere for a short time, sharing glimpses into the lives around me, and making visible the actions and impulses that connect us. I work to uncover the wonder of everyday living.
